7-years-old and already being categorized with the likes of Monet and Picasso

My wife was in awe when she seen Kieron’s story on the News and couldn’t wait to tell me about it. Then she reminded me later to look him up on the internet.

I have always been an animal person and Cats are one of my favorites.

Fortunately, when I started my life over about a decade ago my new Life Partner loved Cats as much as I do. Actually, she is a little more obsessive about it.

We had a studio apartment on Capital Hill in Seattle and she just had to have this cat–Meet Clyde:

Now why is he going on about his Cats? Well, people always ask where I get my ideas for paintings and what keeps me motivated.

The answer is pretty simple-Start by drawing or painting what you Love. Your focus will be greater and you will always have models readily available.

This is a watercolor on 130# coldpress Morilla. No it doesn’t look like Lounging Clyde, but Clyde doesn’t know that.

I was frustrated with the leaves around the Cat, but my primary focus was the Cat.

This one is also a watercolor  on 130# coldpress  Morilla.  The best part for me is the noncommital look in the eyes of this cat. I was much happier with the background foliage, but feel that I may have stunted the legs of this cat.

Further attempts at perfecting my cats is in process and it’s the fact that they are one of my favorite animals. Actually, my cats think they are people, so they aren’t the best models, but what can you do?

This was more of an experiment than a composition.

Usually you would use paper with a course tooth when working with pastels so that the pigment bonds to the paper.

Instead, I used a spray fixative between layers to hold the pigment in place. Allowing me to get more depth of color and eliminate the usual mess that I make with pastels. I have always had problems
mixing Pastels.

As I have said in the past, Artistic License implies that there are no real rules.

Other Artist’s Techniques are always helpful and interesting to follow, but moving through the Creative Experience will guide you to new expressions.

I would still suggest referencing other Artist’s Works and Techniques
to develop your own style and techniques.
