The “Look of the Hawk” is a watercolor on 130# cold press paper.
Along with materials to successfully you must have references to guide you on the particulars of the subject.
Personally- I use calenders, books on the subject, videos, as guides and start doing study sketches in my sketch book.
Study sketches are multiple drawings of the subject performing different actions from various angles to get very familar with the subject. Mastering nuances of it’s shape and form.
This painting is fairly straight forward and I would consider it a Portrait style of the Hawk.
The following is alittle more complex watercolor on 130# cold press paper of a Peregrin Falcon on a snag.

Complexity of this one is due to the angle and combination of movements incorporated by the subject.
However, once the study sketches have been done, this becomes much easier.
True confessions- I actually painted this painting three times! Not that I messed up the others. but they just weren’t what I was trying to see. The Autumn colors really make this painting for me.
That’s the real beauty of the Creative Spirit (painting being only one)- You get to create what you want to see…
